Graduate Program in Science Education

International Collaborations

The PPGEC, in partnership with the Office of the Dean of Graduate Studies at UNIFEI, has strategically promoted internationalization initiatives. Two main axes of these actions can be highlighted:

The first is aimed at enabling Program faculty members to undertake postdoctoral fellowships abroad at internationally recognized centers of excellence and to establish academic partnerships. In this context, in 2018, Professors Luciano Fernandes Silva and Mariana Feiteiro Cavalari Silva completed postdoctoral fellowships at the Institute of Education of University College London (IOE-UCL). This institute was ranked the best in the world in the field of Education for ten consecutive years (2014–2023) by the QS World University Rankings by Subject. In 2023, Professor Mikael Frank Rezende Junior undertook a postdoctoral fellowship at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, in Bellaterra (Cerdanyola del Vallès), Catalonia, Spain. Also in 2023, Professor Alessandra Rodrigues completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Barcelona, Spain.

The second internationalization initiative focuses on hosting distinguished international researchers at UNIFEI. In this context, the Program hosted Professor Pedro Guilherme Rocha dos Reis from the University of Lisbon in 2017; Professor Arthur Powell from Rutgers University in 2018; Professor Ralph Levinson from the Institute of Education of University College London in 2019 and again in 2023; and Professor Silvina Casablancas from the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO), Argentina, in 2022. All of these scholars offered intensive courses within the Graduate Program in Science Education at UNIFEI.

As a result of these initiatives, the Program has established research collaborations with IOE-UCL (with external funding) and with the University of Cambridge. Professor Haira Gandolfi, from the University of Cambridge, co-supervised one of the PPGEC students during the 2021–2022 biennium.

Professor Ralph Levinson was engaged in activities at the PPGEC from October 23 to 30, 2023. On October 25, he delivered a lecture entitled “What is this Thing Called Science? And What Should We Teach About It?” at the Electrical Engineering auditorium.

In addition to the lecture, during the IV SIMPEDUC, Professor Ralph Levinson offered the intensive course “Science Education and Democratic Participation” from October 23 to 30, held at IFQ in the morning period, aimed at PPGEC master’s students and other interested participants.

Professor Ralph Levinson is one of the leading international scholars in the field of Science Education. He has an extensive and diverse academic output and has conducted research in collaboration with scholars from various parts of the world. Furthermore, he has significant experience coordinating large-scale research projects funded by institutions such as the World Bank, The Wellcome Trust, The British Academy, and the European Union.

Professor Silvina Casablancas was engaged in activities at the PPGEC from October 3 to 7, 2022. On October 3, she delivered the lecture “An Unannounced Storm: Changing Scenarios after the Technological Shake-up in Teaching” at the same auditorium. The event was attended by Professor Edson da Costa Bortoni, Rector of UNIFEI; Geise Ribeiro, Director of IFQ; Rodrigo Duarte Seabra, Director of the Institute of Mathematics and Computing (IMC); Marcelo de Paula Corrêa, Director of the Institute of Natural Resources (IRN); and Denise Pereira de Alcântara Ferraz, Coordinator of the PPGEC, as well as an audience composed of faculty members, master’s students, and undergraduate teacher education students from the University.

In addition to the lecture, during the III SIMPEDUC, Professor Silvina taught an intensive course from October 3 to 7, held at IFQ in the morning period, aimed at PPGEC master’s students and other interested participants.

Professor Silvina Casablancas holds a degree in Educational Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires and a Master’s degree in Didactics from the same institution. She earned her PhD in Didactics and Educational Organization from the University of Barcelona, with an award-winning dissertation. She is currently a faculty member and researcher at the National University of Luján. Her work focuses on discussions related to Educational Technologies. She also teaches and supervises graduate (Master’s and PhD) programs in Education at the National University of Córdoba, the University of Palermo, and the Catholic University of Córdoba. In addition, she coordinates the Master’s Program in Education at the National University of Cuyo.

Professor Ralph Levinson carried out academic activities at the PPGEC on November 12 and November 21, 2019. Among these activities, the following stand out: a lecture at the II International Symposium on Science Education (SIMPEDUC), meetings with faculty members and students of the Program, and the offering of an intensive course entitled “Science Education and Democratic Participation.”

Professor Arthur Powell carried out academic activities from October 26 to November 1, 2018. Among these, the following stand out: the offering of an intensive course entitled “Collaborative Technology and Writing for Learning in Dynamic Science,” a lecture at the I SIMPEDUC, meetings with PPGEC faculty members and students, and a meeting with undergraduate students in the Mathematics Teacher Education program.

Professor Arthur Powell directs the School’s Professional Development Program for Mathematics Teachers and earned his PhD in Mathematics Education at Rutgers University, where he currently works. The articulation between the visiting professor’s research and the PPGEC research lines was primarily related to mathematics teacher education, writing and mathematical knowledge, including perspectives on literacy and writing in science more broadly.

In 2017, the Program hosted Professor Pedro Guilherme Rocha dos Reis, from the Institute of Education of the University of Lisbon. Several academic activities were carried out in collaboration between November 19 and 24, 2017. Among these activities, the following stand out: a lecture entitled “Empowering Students for Collective and Informed Action on Environmental Issues: Results from the ‘We Act’ and ‘Irresistible’ Projects,” the offering of an intensive course entitled “Inquiry-Based Science Education,” and meetings with PPGEC research groups.

Professor Pedro Reis has, for many years, been dedicated to initial and continuing teacher education, as well as the supervision of teaching practicums for teachers and educators. He has been involved in research projects, teacher education/supervision, and curriculum development in Portugal and in other European countries (funded by the European Commission), in Africa (funded by the World Bank and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation), and in Brazil (funded by the Portuguese and Brazilian governments).
